There is now a company making vodka from Maine potatoes based in Freeport. The stuff is bloody expensive, but as a locally produced gluten-free spirit, I really had to try it.

It comes in a pretty bottle. Very nice printing and design. But they should use a cork cork instead of a plastic one. It's a class thing. Plastic corks are just tacky. If I wanted a plastic cork I'd by Andre Champagne at $4 a bottle and get the added sport of seeing how many walls I could bounce the cork off of.

Unlike most high end vodkas, Cold River has a smell and a taste. It doesn't have any perceptible aftertaste, it has foretaste, you notice it when you first drink it, then it fades. I've notice grape vodkas tent to have a slightly acid aftertaste. The maple syrup vodka has a sweet sugary aftertaste. The milk vodka has a slight aftertaste although it's hard to identify what it is exactly. But this is stronger than all of them. I can't place it, but it's almost chemical. I think it might be relegated to mixed drinks, which is not appropriate for the top-shelf price.
