I read Burton's "Death of Oyster Boy" last night. I must admit it's a bit like seeing a singer act, or an actor sing. It seems Mr. Burton is straddling the dark and children's lit, with limited success. Some of the poems are fun and hit the right spots. Others clink and clank like Frankenstein's monster with a bear trap around his leg. The illustrations are also mixed. Some work well and enhance the poetry. Some don't really enhance the story or suffer from pour layout choices. Others seem to be there to make the book a bit thicker.

So was it all bad? Heavens no. It was a fun way to pass the time. But I won't be rushing out to buy it.
