of mice and men

When I first discovered Project Gutenberg and bought the ebook readers I blundered forward with all the enthusiasm and direction of a lobotomized black lab. I had a vague idea of making a site that could store various file formats and provide a searchable database of PG and user uploaded files, at first for myself but with the ability to have multiple people access it. It was rather grandiose.

[livejournal.com profile] derien was poking me a few weeks ago about the fact that I hadn't done anything with it. The fact is I realized that the number of people who actively use the file formats I'm working in is probably less than 1,000 outside of Russia. (Russia has a large percentage of the world's ebook fans, search for ebook on LJ and see how many Cyrillic character sets you get.) As far as HTML data, the files I make look nice in a browser but very few people want to read "War and Peace" at a computer. So my desire to work on the overall site vanished. What I've already created serves my purposes and makes downloading and converting books easier. The only thing I haven't had was a catalog of what files I have created, in case anyone ever wanted one of them.

This is a job for Library Thing! I added all the files I have on my ebook (here).
