business as usual
May. 4th, 2003 09:56 pmHere is a case of the free market at work.
Pfizer announced that it would be closing its location in Kalamazoo, MI which has been active for a century. The other shoe is the why. It's not because the people at the location are not performing or that local business conditions are unfavorable. No, it's more slimy than that.
The legislature of Michigan didn't put certain of Pfizer's drugs on its preferred medicines list for medicare (or 'caid, I can't remember which is the state one). So in order to let Michigan know it misbehaved and send a clear signal to other states that might think of not saving tax payer dollars, Pfizer is announced the closing in Kalamazoo while simultaneously announcing that there would be significant investment in facilities in New Jersey, where they are on the preferred drugs list.
Free market economics, of which our beloved President seems to be such a fan, cannot function unless there is a free market. That means if the drug is overpriced for what it is states shouldn't be bribed into buying it. Pfizer sucks. They suck bad.
Here are some products you might think of finding an alternative to if possible:
Prescription
Aricept, Bextra, Celebrex, Diflucan, Lipitor, Relpax, Viagra, Viracept, Zoloft, Zyrtec
Over-the-Counter
Benadryl, Cortizone, Desitin, e.p.t, Listerine, Lubriderm, Neosporin,Rolaids,Sudafed,Visine
