reading (Second Foundation)
May. 6th, 2010 07:43 pmI finished reading "Second Foundation" on Tuesday. I really enjoyed the series although sometimes the many double-double-double crosses felt like the very last scene of "Murder by Death" where the murderer peels away mask after mask with each detective's theory.
The style of the books is dated as you might expect. But it's not the science that's dated, but the language and style. I find the lack of modern profanity endearing. The use of "galaxy" in place of all profane exclamation is cute and a bit quaint feeling, but it's much more likely in the far future than an anglo-saxon monosyllable. The books are amazing in how little action takes place on screen, how little character development takes place and yet they still drag you in like a black hole. I don't know how he does it, but Asimov just has a way of getting you to follow.
There is a bit of repetition because of the original format of the sections being stand alone stories, but they repeat amazingly little. Overall, the stories have past a half century with the grace and soft spoken nature of an elder statesman.
