reading (A Stainless Steel Rat is Born)
Feb. 4th, 2012 02:38 pmI finished Harry Harrison's "A Stainless Steel Rat is Born" last night. It was a fun romp, on the YA side of science fiction. It's certainly not the be all and end all of science fiction. The main character goes from being astoundingly competent to astoundingly incompetent and back again in no time flat, of course, he's a teenager, so maybe that's realistic. Only one of the six(?) characters in the book is female and she's utterly awful. It would have been nice if any of the side characters was represented as having two braincells to rub together. Maybe having a competent foil would have made the competence of our heroes more evident. The book plays fast and loose with the capabilities of different groups of people, but what can you say, it's a romp.
