I finished "The Curious Republic of Gondour" last night. It is a collection of short pieces written originally for magazine or newspaper. It's a small volume and a quick read.

I had little use for the title piece. Utopian pieces are most often their own satires and don't need help. The same can be said for political systems, if you don't have a detailed alternative you don't have an alternative. Some of the other pieces struck we as sharp, witty, and succinct. My favorites include "About Smells" and "Curious Relic for Sale." Many of the subjects are still as relevant today as they were when written. Though some of the tone is quaint, the humor is not.
