LJ strike,boycott,whatever

After [livejournal.com profile] derien joined LJ for a while I resisted. One of the reasons I resisted was that I knew LJ had the dot bomb business plan. You know that one: expenses, zero revenue, maybe someone will buy us. I didn't want to get used to the interface and grow to like the community and have to deal with change. I am a creature of habit. I finally gave in, knowing full well that it had to change at some point.

Well, why is anyone surprised that one of the buyers wants to stop hemorrhaging money? I know, they pick the stupidest ways to do it. Again, what do you expect, these were people who were dumb enough to pay good money for a company that's been training its customers for years that their product isn't worth any money! They're probably spending the rest of their cash on sub-prime mortgages. I can't see LJ's monthly income statements, but I'd bet they're more red than black.

I'm amazed that LJ has existed as long as it has without a significant change in structure or charges. Either they have to make money at this gig or it has to go away. It's too big to be someones toy, unless that someone is Paul Allen.

Do I think they are shooting themselves in the foot? No. A new user will be able to sign up with an ad ladened account and not pay cash. Anyone interested in exploring and experimenting doesn't have to fork over the bucks. Then when they are committed they upgrade to get the icons.
