I finished "The Pinball Effect" yesterday afternoon after picking away at it for weeks. I think Mr. Burke's style and treatment of history is better suited to television than to print. On television things fly by quicker. I couldn't help but notice the assumptions and the loose (at best) connections he was drawing in some places. He does throw in a lot of interesting facts. If you read this book without encountering one new fact then you have an immense knowledge of history and probably excellent recall as well. I found some of the assumptions and the nebulous links to be distracting, but most people probably wouldn't be bothered by them. It is definitely an alternative to the straightforward history book.
