And this is better how?
Where national government used to have dominion over the land, now international corporations rule the roost. One easy example (without going into energy or defense): Despite an outcry from the public last year, legislation has been passed allowing the FCC regulations regarding media ownership to stand. Try to figure out what is owned by Sony or Disney sometime and you'll come to understand how powerful a hold a small number of corporations has on nearly all media outlets.
There are rewards for individuals. CBS won't carry any generic anti-shrub ads. There is also a new feeling of power in the industry. They answer to no one other than publicity and ratings, hence incidents like Sunday's Boobapalooza. The day the government has the ability to regulate or even influence these entities has passed.
PS:
So what that Janet Jackson showed her boob. The jewelry was interestingly designed and nice looking. The thing it was attached to was likewise well designed and nice looking. As for saving the children from a boob. How about we show them the boobs? Maybe if they saw them as natural parts of the human body now and then (well the natural ones anyway) they wouldn't grow up to be obsessed and seeing them as supersized, scientifically constructed objects of objectification. Instead let's protect the children from parents who use television as a babysitter and try to delegate their responsibility for teaching their children about life to daycares and schools. There are plenty of things on television that children could be protected from. To pick a breast from all those things to me seems absurd to the point of farce.
