It's the bees. I had forgotten how granny uses the bees in this one during the defeat of the queen. So now I have to re-read the final book. Tiffany fights the queen and the chalk comes to her aid. But then don't the bees come to her aid as well? I can't really remember. When does granny die? Or does she die?
As I say, I don't remember clearly, but I think I'm going to have to pay closer attention next time I read The Shepard's Crown.
Oh, and I don't believe for a moment T. Pratchett wrote that book last. The quality of the writing and the plot were simply too good compared to the prior few books. It was either written earlier and held in reserve or substantially worked by someone else who was very good, deserves the highest praise, and would never admit it (R. Pratchett seems a good candidate). If the latter is true, I am very grateful to said person for putting a most fitting end to the series. I also could see Terry holding it reserve because he wanted everything to end tidied up neat all at once (Discworld and him).
