derien moved in with me. Although the lyrics of "Allison" don't reflect the reality of our relationship the energy of that album does reflect our relationship at the time and even now when we let our hair down, though neither of us has much to let down anymore. We used to dance around the house to the Lemonheads while getting ready to go out dancing. We had no auto at the time so we walked anywhere we wanted to be or I would take my bike. We had no money at the time so we did things generally on the cheap. But we being seduced by life and seducing it.
We were living in the tiniest bedroom of a 3 bedroom apartment which we shared with two roommates. The previous tenants had used our room as a walk in closet. We had a twin bed and a set of bookshelves in the room and there was a patch of floor about 1x4 feet that wasn't covered by those. But the front room had a sunny view of the college campus across the street. Which was welcome because there was no insulation and we couldn't afford oil in the winter. Around Christmas time the downstairs neighbors went away and turned their heat down. We had been using the heat we gained off of them to supplement our lack of heat.derien and I were sitting around the table in our bathrobes one morning after eating breakfast when I realized that the coke I had left on the table between us had frozen. It was then we realized we'd adapted to the cold way too well.
Things change of course. The only other solvent roommate moved out, got married, and had a kid. After the second replacement roommate I finally gave up on collecting long distance charges and rent in arrears every month and cleaning up after everyone. We moved out and took a small dark one bedroom apartment closer to downtown. I graduated, got a job, and jumped on the hamster wheel. Six months or so later our other roommate moved to Korea as a way to avoid breaking up with his girlfriend in person.
