trip report
Back from our trip.
Arrived well after dark the first night. We resembled dragons as big clouds of vapor formed every time we exhaled. Cold, cold night filled with dreams of freezing and restless sleep.
Morning finds wonderful birdsongs and sunshine. Big breakfast with tea to get warmed up then off for a mile or so hike with a moderate incline. Returned to a light lunch just in time for the awakening of the bugs. The blackflies were not really biting but were pretty thick. We sat in the van, while squadrons of them circled outside. All kinds of birds including one cute little one that was hopping along the ground cleaning up low flying blackflies with wild abandon.
Evening Doe went next door to help a woman string up her tarp before the rain began. That turned into an epic. I've never seen anyone take over two hours to put up a tarp. The rains began before her tent was pitched, but then went away again. Supper was warm and cozy with popcorn and hot chocolate for desert. The night turned out not as cold as the prior and life was happy.
Saturday found another sunny day. We slept late, then went out for a mile or so walk before fixing breakfast. By the time we got back from our walk the sun had given in to a high overcast. We decided to go into North Conway so I could shop for some hiking boots at the Limmer boot factory. Found boots for me and
derien both. The sales guy took the time and fitted us with precision. I now know that my left foot is longer than my right, just the opposite for
derien. They are all leather boots so there will be some breakin time before we can really tell how we like the boots and give a proper review.
Returned to the campsite just in time for the rain to begin. It started as a persistent drizzel, then escalated to a persistent steady rain. That continued for most of the night and was still dripping in the morning. Everything got really pretty damp from the moisture in the air.
This morning we didn't get a walk because the forest was wet and we were ready to be away from cold and damp. We packed up and toddled back home without incident.
Things of note for this shakedown run:
The fridge performed just great.
The water was just barely sufficient (ran the tank out in the morning right before we left)
Didn't use the heater much because of noise and inconvienence. Need to make brackets and such so it will be easy to use.
Candle lanterns are excellent, easy to use and provide adequate light for most activity but not reading fine print.
Ebook reader is perfect for nighttime because it lights itself.
Need some minor additions in kitchen implements and organization but overall we were self-sufficient with the exception of potty and shower facilities.
