How do you really know someone wants to talk to you? There is no polite way to say, "hey, I don't fucking want to talk to you." People won't even tell you if they don't want to talk to you. If you initiate a conversation they'll be polite and answer you. But did they want to? I'm lousy at picking up social clues relating to myself, I need billboards (or clue-by-fours).
For the most part I assume people don't want to talk to me. It seems safer that way. Then I'm not imposing on anyone who's too busy or just doesn't really like me. Anyway, I'm a shy hermit so the package all kind of goes together.
In unrelated news, my current dentist is really cool. He remembers (or more likely makes notes in the chart) things to talk about involving my interests, work, and what we talked about last time. I've never met a professional who could simulate the old fashion house call making doctor who knows your family. I know it's an illusion, but he takes the trouble to create the illusion. He gets points for that.
