I was surprised by "The Green Hills of Africa". The first surprise was that it was written in autobiographical form, not with fictional characters. The second surprise was that despite the fact that it's entirely based on hunting, I liked it. I'm not massively into hunting. In fact I'm not at all into hunting. If you told me to read a book about someone hunting for a few weeks on end, I'd volunteer for a root canal instead. But it was damn fine writing. It had humor that made me laugh out loud. It had interesting characters revealed slowly through little hints and incidents. And it had an appreciation for nature, in between the bits where bits of nature were getting bits of lead blown into them.
