This week I've been taking my reading to work with me and reading on my morning break and at lunch.

Today at work one of the guys commented on the fact that the book I was reading today was different from yesterday's book. I explained that I finished the other book and told him about my pseudo New Year's Resolution of a book a week. Without a pause he said, "I could do that."

Now I don't know his reading habits, the statement might well be true. But I know my own experience. If you asked me three years ago if I thought I read 50 books a year I probably would have answered in the affirmative. Last year, after tracking what I had read for the whole year I realized how unlikely that was. Working for a living really cuts into your reading time. In retrospect, I think there was only one year when I read more than 50 books, that was the year I was working at the parking garage.

This year, barring major brain injury, I'll will keep my resolution. But it wasn't an end in itself. I made it to remind myself that reading is important to me and something I want in my life on a daily basis. I've been very happy with the results, the goal has motivated me to finish some of the more challenging books I might have gotten bogged down in otherwise.

Will I continue it into the new year? I don't know. It's good, but it is a serious commitment of time.
