Last night I finished Roger Zelanzy's "Doorways in the Sand." It is one of the few Zelazy books I have not read before. It was written in 1976 so I was expecting the kind of metaphysical, metaphorical confusion that I remembered from reading early Zelazny in my youth.
To my pleasant surprise, I was not out of my depth reading this novel. I was drawn in from the first page and I don't think there was a wasted word to the last. Some of the ideas brought up here could have very easily found their way into movies (Men in Black particularly). This is neither the light fair of Zelazny's comedies or the walk through metaphoric landscape of some of his other works, it's a nice balance of action and meaning.
