Two distinct possibilities for vacation this year are:

Sept. 16 - 18th, ferry trip to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and overnight stay
November 5 - 11?th, camping at Cinnamon Bay, St. John, USVI

The first would involve a night riding up on the Scotia Prince, which departs from Portland. It's one of those trips that neither of us has ever done, but it's always right there. There is a possibility that this will be the last year the Scotia Prince services Portland, so it might be a good time to go. A short trip, that won't really use up any vacation time, this one seems like a no brainer.

We've never been to the islands. I figured St. John would be a good way to avoid some of the tourist resort feel, avoid the related expense, and get a feel for how we could stay cheaply without the risk of ending up in a very bad place. It's kind of a compromise between my desire to avoid tourist traps and the need to be safe when exploring new areas. The Cinnamon Bay campground is right on the beach. Half of St. John's is a park which seems like a nice idea. I figure in November we won't have too worry too much about snow storms and the related travel problems and parking bans. The only downside is it is hurricane season. Even with the cheap way of staying, it's at the upper end of our vacation budget this year, but it would be such a marked change from Maine I think it will be worth it.
