As I was being prep'd for my surgery these two young women came in and started wiring me up. This was before the various vital sign monitors that were hooked up in surgery and the funky things they put on your legs now to keep blood moving round. This was just the preliminary wiring. They explained that they would be monitoring the nerves during surgery. One of them placed electrodes across the right side of my face starting on my upper lip. Four or five little patches with wires attached made a curving line from there to just above my eyebrow. Then a couple more on the opposite shoulder. I assume those were for ground because the surgeon wasn't going to get near there. She then taped the wires together in various patterns to keep them out of the way of the action. They then tested the wires, plugging them into a generic box that takes wires and fiddling with meaningful looking knobs like Dr. Who on a busy day.
As they wandered off, their work done, depriving me of their presence, I couldn't help but but thinking how I closely I must resemble Locutus of Borg. Then again, I wish I looked like Patrick Stewart. Maybe that red laser thing he had actually worked. At that point all I could see was pleasantly round and fuzzy blobs moving about because my current ocular implants are defective. I wouldn't want to be a borg, but trying out some of their gadgets might be cool.
