reading (The Story of Philosophy)
May. 29th, 2006 08:12 pmI finally finished Will Durant's "The Story of Philosophy." It was an epic struggle, lasting longer than some relationships.
First, if you're looking for an introduction to different philosophers that might tempt you into reading their original works, go out immediately and buy some other book! Somehow by adding historical relevance, a bit of life story, and critique around the summary of each philosopher, Durant has figured out a way to remove every ounce of soul from the poor suckers. Reading this book was right up there with listening to President Bush try to speak. Either one makes a root canal sound like a nice way to spend an afternoon.
The one lingering impression Durant leaves is that all the Philosophers after Aristotle were disenfranchised losers who couldn't get laid. Instead of admitting they were losers they became philosophers and wrote about how wrong the rest of the world was , how great they were, and how women weren't worth the trouble anyway.
If you want to hate all philosophers, drag yourself through the 530 fine print pages of this book. If you want to understand the full meaning of depraved, do it on a kneeler while whipping yourself with a small flogger.
