Today was a moderately productive day off. It was better than I expected because on Sunday my back tweaked with a "take your breath way" stabbing. I've spent much of the intervening time with a heating pad on my back and when I woke up this morning my back had this feeling of "if you do the least little thing wrong, I'm going to make you PAY."

I started out dragging small limbs from places they were piled in the woods last fall over to the sawbuck and dividing them into "cut with chainsaw" and "clipper and bundle" piles. The clipper and bundle pile is in the barn, so that if it is wet tomorrow there will be work to do indoors. I got all three piles which were in the woods dragged, cut up with the loppers, and segregated appropriately.

After that I weeded the lingonberries, which after 4? years are starting to become a respectable ground cover in their rock garden hillside. Then I raked the leaves off the low bush blueberries at the top of the yard. Some of those were plants from fedco, some are ones I raised from seed, and some are sod squares from fedco. The sod squares seem to be the quickest way to get lowbush berries established, with the seed raised taking forever and having a limited success rate, but having the benefit of being basically free (one blueberry has many many seeds, but they are absurdly small and take a long time to germinate and grow).

I finished up my working day by pulling more rose up in the forest. The area I picked to work was some of the most thickly infested so even with a few hours of work I didn't clear all that much area. But I did make a pretty good pile of rose brush. It's becoming obvious that we've already cleared the worst of the rose out.

There are lots of tiny two-leaf maple trees in the forest and a fair number of flowers coming up. I try to avoid damaging either of those when pulling rose or walking through the forest, although the maples are so prolific it can be hard not to step on one every now and then.

Now I think it might be time for a soak in the tub and some tylenol.
