I'd never been inside the State Street Church. It is an impressive building, goth enough to make The Cure look pop. The shape of the venue provided strong reverb, but the excess of wooden surfaces made the top end bright. The sound guy had a hard time coping, but it was mostly under control during the second half of Vega's set.

Audrey Ryan opened the show. She has a healthy set of lungs. No, I don't mean that in the euphemistic way it is often said although the euphemism is true. She truly has a healthy set of lungs. She may have been able to reach the back rows of the church without a mic. I thought she did a good job in a difficult situation, opening as a solo artist is never easy. I must say, she could use Adam Brodsky's gift for words, her lyrics didn't interest me at all.

Suzanne did a fair amount of stuff off her new album which sounds more electric and rockin' than the last few outings if the performance was representative. The band seemed to be having fun. Many of the older songs she did were the same ones that she did in Freeport when we saw her last. I never get tired or "Caramel", it comes off really well in concert. I felt "Left of Center" was a bit hurried which bummed me out because I adore the song. She can still sound like a psycho teenage girl in "Blood Makes Noise", giving a little different bite to the song with each performance. Overall, I don't think the performance was as strong as we've seen in the past, but I enjoyed the banter and playfulness that Suzanne had on stage.

[livejournal.com profile] derien didn't seem that happy with the concert, but I think she was just in a grumpy mood and wanted to sleep.

In other news, I'm exhausted, but life is pretty good.
