I finished "Letters to Sam" a few days ago. It's a thin volume, but did take me a while to read. It's written as a series of letters from a grandfather, who has been living with quadriplegia for 30 years, to his grandson, who has autism. As a private epistle between grandfather and grandson this cannot be criticised. However, as a book published for broader consumption it is and should be open to criticism.

I found this book to be a mixed bag. There is a usual dose of good advice of the sort all older generations try to give to younger generations, which is a lot easier to dispense than to live. There was some specific advice on disability, prejudice, and coping, which although hard to apply is probably way more useful than the general advice. There was also lots of affirmation; psychological huggles and snuggles.

I was a bit surprised to see the mix of subject matter. The format was in letters to a child, but the content of the letters had a very wide range of age appropriateness. Some of the letters talk specifically to a young child. Some of the letters would probably be much more fitting for a teenager. It might take multiple readings or selected readings at different ages to get the messages across.
