eorI finished "Nearer the Moon" the 1937-1939 installment of Anais Nin's diary after a marathon reading session today. I had started it before going on vacation, but didn't take it with me on the train. This is the last installment that I have of Nin's diaries and I must admit I'm overjoyed to be finished. It's been a long trip through eight volumes. After a short while in Paris her justifications to herself became stale for me, that was three volumes ago.
The last 100 pages of this book seemed to switch from items written on the day to summaries that cover chunks of time. These summaries are more cohesive and appear more edited than the daily entries. They tend to be more symbolic and metaphorical, but not as metaphorical as some of the entries at toward the end of previous volumes. This isn't swimming in an ocean of symbolism, just wading across a stream.
