Jun. 26th, 2005 08:46 amYesterday CNN.com was running a headline about the fact that female marines were killed in Iraq. I resent that. These women signed up along with many other females and many males to enlist. They went through vigorous training and I would expect wore the title marine proudly because it's something they worked hard to earn. By mentioning their sex in the headline you do a disservice to them. It invokes the whole "oh, we must protect our little girls and our mothers that can't defend themselves." These women deserve better than that. The mothers, sisters, and daughters who died have no different value than the fathers, brothers, and sons who died. That value is infinite to those who know them and love them. That value is minimal to those who order them into harm's way.
