Sep. 30th, 2005 07:46 pmI know, I wasn't going to read this issue yet. But I got started on one story last night and got quickly dragged into reading the entire issue.
This one was a stronger issue than the last two, more enjoyable to read overall. Liz William's "Ikiryoh" was short and bittersweet. "To the East, A Bright Star" was as sweet as death and destruction can be. The end of the world played background to one man's redemption. "Amba" took another dark look at the near future and the nature of predators. The lone novella in the issue, "Diving Into The Wreck", was part political part mystery. Each of this story had a social or political axe to grind, but for the most part they were expressed as background or subplots, not the overriding part of the story. Well except for "The Perimeter" which used the brick wall approach and "Earthtime" which was an exploration of the mystical.
Now I'm ready to take on some longer fare. The novels are shuffling around on the shelves restlessly flapping their covers trying to make enough noise to get attention. When they get like this it makes it hard to sleep.
