Press: There is a new iPhone out.

Reality: Covid cases spiking all over the place. Proxy war between Russia and Turkey. A teacher decapitated. Chaos and curfew in Lagos. Let's not mention Belarus. Russian hacking of everything and everyone. Dot. Dot. Dot. Dot.

Press: What we love about the new iPhone.

Who gives a flying fornication!? In order to talk on the iPhone you'll need to stick it where your head is, so why don't you just do that?

Sorry, I just don't care that a corporate behemoth is flogging yet another device no one really needs. If I were in charge of such a corporation I might have the good sense not to launch in the middle of this faeces show, but I suppose it just had to be "out for Christmas".

My reaction to this article was perhaps a bit harsh. Here is the comment I sent the author:

cut for length )

Because of the lack of explanation of where the money went, the only impression I get is that these people were glaringly stupid. Am I a bad person for feeling anger and not sympathy for this scenario?

Yes, these people were probably manipulated by predatory lenders, but spending twice your income is gross negligence. People shouldn't be excused from irresponsible behavior, they should be held responsible.

Think about it. )

I recently heard a US senator quote the cost of the occupation of Iraq at $10 billion per week. I don't for a minute think the Iraqi people are getting $10 billion worth of service each week. I think large companies are getting the goldmine and they are getting the shaft.

It's guns versus butter time. Let's put some things in perspective.  )

"There comes a time when the operation of the machine is so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part, you can’t even passively take part" - Mario Savio

I discriminate against minority groups. I expect them to be more sympathetic toward others because they have experienced discrimination. I resent it more when a person who belongs to a religious minority is intolerant of another social minority (or vice versa) than I do when a member of the majority does the same thing. I expect people who've experience the unpleasant acts of prejudice to not perpetrate the same thing on others. I know it's wrong to expect them to be better people than the asshole public at large, but I must admit I do.

So when a member of one of those groups says something with "They are all..." the hair on the back of my neck stands up. It doesn't matter what group you're talking about. The only good way to finish that sentence is "human." They are all human. If you finish that sentence any other way you're turning them from individuals into a group to be dehumanized, demonized, and discriminated against. You're one of the assholes.

No, this wasn't about one incident. This was about a hundred million incidents. A hundred million assholes wondering why the world treats them poorly.

Oh, great.
