Thoreau's "A Plea for Captain John Brown" is a snapshot of a particular point in American history from a particular perspective. . Thoreau's Plea was not for Brown's life, but for his reputation and legacy. The writing is over the top political rabble rousing. It probably wasn't very well received even in a town as liberal as Concord, MA was at the time. If you tried to repeat the performance in Concord today you'd probably get run over by a series Volvo's and SUV's as you left the town hall.

He really knows how to rail against government though. :) It would be fun to have someone like him at a party, get him liquored up, and turn him on a pack of Young Republicans.
