Today during our daily update at work it was announced that one of our longtime coworkers died last night. His step-son, who also works with us, came in to deliver the news himself. I admire him for having the strength and the understanding to volunteer to do that.
The guy wasn't even 50. He still had over 20 years to go until the government said he could retire. I remember wishing him a good weekend as I walked out exhausted on Friday afternoon.
The company did all it could. They chose not to close the building but had grief counselors on hand and gave people the option of working or not as they wanted. The our boss three times removed came down to be there for the announcement and afterward. They also had the manager who was transferred out of the building a few months ago come back down because of his relationship with the people in the building. I've never seen a company respond so well. Then again I haven't seen many companies have employees stick around for 17 years.

with a date for me.
to arrive at some point
I don't when it will be." --- Suzanne Vega "The Thin Man"
