[livejournal.com profile] keelywolfe's recent entry reminded me of yesterday's trip to the grocery store.

Can you go to the store and buy tomato sauce? Just tomato sauce mind you, not the stuff with zesty garlic, or Italian style tomato sauce. Plain tomato sauce. You know, tomato mushed up with maybe a little water in it.

We used to be able to buy that but now everything has extras in it. Inevitably things like "natural flavors." Due to my sensitivity to gluten I don't buy anything with natural flavors. Who knows what natural flavors mean. I'm more likely to consume something that says "nasty assed chemicals that nature would never produce." I like component ingredients. I can combine them in ways I see fit. Leave my staple foods alone!

It's not like anyone eats tomato sauce straight from the can. They are going to mix it with something anyway. Tomato sauce is supposed to be a basic component. If you want to add stuff to it, call it spaghetti sauce and be done with it.

In the opposite direction: Cape Cod Potato Chips have very clear allergen labeling. Buy them and you don't have to fret about missing some hidden poison in the ingredient list.
