I was surprised by "The Green Hills of Africa". The first surprise was that it was written in autobiographical form, not with fictional characters. The second surprise was that despite the fact that it's entirely based on hunting, I liked it. I'm not massively into hunting. In fact I'm not at all into hunting. If you told me to read a book about someone hunting for a few weeks on end, I'd volunteer for a root canal instead. But it was damn fine writing. It had humor that made me laugh out loud. It had interesting characters revealed slowly through little hints and incidents. And it had an appreciation for nature, in between the bits where bits of nature were getting bits of lead blown into them.

Yesterday we drove down to Amherst, MA to visit [livejournal.com profile] matushan, who's there for a little while for work. It was a fairly long, but pleasant, drive down with rain starting just as we entered Amherst. It was nice to see [livejournal.com profile] matushan and Amherst. We also got to meet [livejournal.com profile] matushan's daughter, who is the single most charming kid I've ever met. Despite the fact that she was feeling under the weather she was full of smiles and happiness. She even liked me, which shows she'll get along with anyone. All indications are that she'll take after her mum: sweet, lively, and very intelligent.

Oh, the icon isn't exactly on topic, but it's one I just made for Maine (or more generally New England). It's a shot I took of the Portland Headlight.
