reading (The Victorian Fairy Tale Book)
Sep. 25th, 2011 10:01 amI finished s"The Victorian Fairy Tale Book" over a week ago, but it got lost on my desk, so I forgot to post about it. I obviously should clean off my desk. This collection varies widely in quality and readability. Some of the stories seem to be straightforward earnest fairy stories. Others, like "The Rose and the Ring" seem to be poking fun at the genre. That story is so over the top in places that I couldn't read it as anything but a farce. Some of the collection are just tediously preachy ("The Selfish Giant") or simply tedious ("The Golden Key"). This may be a good representative collection of Victorian fairy tales, if so, they had a lot of dross. The collection would be much more enjoyable if it were less representative.
