After several days with snow earlier in the week, it was over 70 degrees and sunny here yesterday. Wiplash weather. We still have some significant patchs of snow and ice in the yard, but most of it is just soupy. Yesterday I was out until about 6:30pm trying to get a start on the usual early season duties. Because of the late snow, we're a bit behind the curve.

Most of the day was spent transporting and cutting up buckthorn trees that we've ripped out. They are nuisance trees (look awful, grown thorns, have berries that aren't good for humans or wildlife) and we've had a lot of them around the property. I've been slowly clearing them out, cutting the biggest and ripping out by the roots any I can. This time of year is perfect for removing roots because the ground doesn't hold well when it's this wet. I've created a lot of piles of twigs a fair amount of small rounds to be cut up with the chainsaw. Also cleaned out the interior of both cars, which needed it badly.

I was able to split some wood yesterday while wearing a chest strap heart monitor. [info]Derien watched the readings on my phone, so I could work normally. It turned out about like I expected: if I try to rush it, I start to feel I'm overdoing it and my pulse goes up toward the top of my usual exercise range. If I go at a moderate but steady pace, my heart rate stays at or below the point I usually exercise at on the treadmill. At that pace I was able to split for 30 minutes without a problem and still have energy left at the end to throws some of the wood uphill for pickup with the wheelbarrow. I actually split about half of the easy rounds (12 inch or less). I'm not sure it'll be as easy to split the large trunk pieces. It's hard to be moderate when using the sledge hammer and splitting wedges.

Today I've finished clearing the old canes out of the raspberry patch and almost finished cleaning out the thimbleberry patch. I've still got a remaining pile of buckthorn to deal with, then a whole lot of limbs/trunks to transport up to the cutting area. Nothing green yet and not even any early flowers or garlic. But the trees have buds swelling, so it shouldn't be long before things greeen up.
