I picked up an ebook compilation of the Steinbeck short novels, so it was easy to read them all at once. I feel for the most part Steinbeck loves his characters even if things don't end well for them. He writes them with foibles and failings, but he makes them relatable. I like the fact that he seems to appreciate all different types of people. The only story I didn't really like was "The Pearl". In "The Pearl", I thought he was just torturing the main characters for no reason. Like he was trying to prove just how shit the world is to people at the bottom and they are allowed absolutely zero happiness. Now I agree that the world is shit to people at the bottom, but if a well-educated white male is going to write that he should probably stick someone who looks and speaks like him in the place of getting the walloping.
